Becky Kaplan, Long Island Rough Rider and University of Maryland sophomore midfielder was set a difficult task on November 21, 2009; to stop US women’s soccer international and Olympic Gold Medalist midfielder, Tobin Heath.
Heath, a senior at the University of North Carolina has registered 13 goals and 15 assists in the past two seasons and is one of the reasons the No. 1 seeded Tar Heels were 2008 National Champions.
Kaplan excelled in the game, a narrow 1-0 defeat, imposing herself on Heath, making her a non-factor in the match. "She was constantly on her and not allowing anything," University of Maryland women’s soccer coach Brian Pensky said.
The Tar Heels went onto play Stanford in the 2009 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship game at Aggie Soccer Stadium, Texas on December 6, 2009 clinching their 21st women’s soccer title in a 1-0 win, the assist provided by Heath.
