Valencia named Men’s Assistant Coach

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ROUGH RIDERS NAME VALENCIA ASSISTANT COACH

Has coached club in NYCFC Academy Development League since 2015

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. – (Wednesday, April 26, 2017) – The Long Island Rough Riders, exclusive PDL affiliate of New York City FC, today are pleased to announce the signing of assistant coach Sergio Valencia for the upcoming 2017 season.

Valencia has been with the Rough Riders since 2015 as coach in the NYCFC Academy Development League.

“Coaching in the PDL will be another world for me since the majority of my experience is with younger players, while these players will already be developed and understand the concepts about the tactical game,” Valencia said. “With my experience as a ex-professional and national team player, I can share the value of the locker room with this group of players. I am looking forward to helping Flavio Ferri in this new adventure for me.”

Valencia’s coaching career took flight when he moved to the United States in 1999 and formed the New York Soccer Latin Academy in 2002 with Francisco Guerrero. Since then, he has become the director of the Hempstead EOC Soccer Club and coached at the Rough Riders’ youth levels.

After rising to the top division of the El Salvador Professional League as a player, Valencia was offered a spot on the El Salvador National Team. He was a member of the 1998 squad that fell just short of qualifying for the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. His professional playing career came to a halt after 11 years.

“Sergio is an important addition to the staff,” Long Island general manager Flavio Ferri said. “His international playing experience and coaching resume will allow him to directly contribute to our success.”

Valencia will prove to be an integral part of the Rough Riders coaching staff. He has a familiarity with the club that is hard to find. He also has a wealth of experience coaching at the youth levels, including the Los Angeles Galaxy Academy.

The Long Island Rough Riders open the 2017 season on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at home against the Westchester Flames. Tickets are available at www.liroughriders.com. The Rough Riders offer many ticket options for home games in order to provide interactive fun and excitement for family and friends.
