Game Preview: May 20th Double Header

Men’s preview vs. FC Boston:

The Long Island Rough Riders look to continue to build off a dominant performance in a 5-1 win against Westchester in their PDL season opener as they host FC Boston at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Cy Donnelly Stadium on the campus of St. Anthony’s High School.

Following a sloppy first half by both teams that was influenced by the heavy rains and driving wind, the Rough Riders took command of the game by scoring three goals in a 15-minute span in the second half, which was delayed nearly an hour due to standing water on the field. Shaun Foster, Tyler Bottle and Tom Wharf each scored, giving the home side a 3-0 lead by the 60th minute. Westchester got within 3-1 eight minutes later, but goals by Tyler Arnone in the 71st and 86th iced the game for Long Island (1-0-0).

“The first half was quite poor in quality from both teams, which in part was due to the weather,” Rough Riders head coach Flavio Ferri said. “After a lengthy delay, I am proud of the character, spirit and determination our players showed. It’s good to open the season up with a win under those circumstances.”

Botte, a forward, was named to the PDL Team of the Week after one goal and two assists in the victory.

FC Boston (0-1-0) opened its 2017 campaign with a 2-1 loss at GPS Portland Phoenix.

Women’s preview vs. NJ Copa FC:

The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team opened its 2017 United Women’s Soccer season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against the Western New York Flash. It doesn’t get any easier for the Rough Riders, who host 2016 UWS runner-up New Jersey Copa FC at 5 p.m. Saturday at Cy Donnelly Stadium on the campus of St. Anthony’s High School.

Long Island’s early pressure on the Flash was rewarded with the game’s opening goal — an 18th-minute score by Hope Quinonez. The visitors flipped the script in the second half applying the majority of the pressure, which resulted in the game-tying score in the 86th minute as the teams split the points.

“A draw is a fair result for the game, but I’d love to see us maintain that pressure throughout the game,” Rough Riders coach Adam Whitehead said. “It was the first game of the season so there are obviously positives and negatives to build and improve upon moving forward.”

Rough Riders midfielder Kimberly Marra was named to the UWS Team of the Week honorable mention for her solid play against the Flash.

New Jersey Copa FC (1-0-0) opened its season with a 6-0 win against the Rochester Lady Lancers.

Long Island (0-0-1) will look to replicate its 2016 home success against N.J. Copa, winning 3-0 in the inaugural UWS game on May 14.
