Over 170 Junior Rough Riders Girls, along with their families and siblings as well as their coaches have left Long Island on Thursday, June 25th, when the teams went on the road in the direction of Montreal.
“We are excited to be able to provide this trip for our players,” said Rough Riders President Peter Zaratin. “This is a great opportunity for them to gain international experience in this young stage of their soccer career.”
On their way to Canada, the girls stopped in Albany, NY for a Regeneration Training, before arriving in Montreal in the evening. Friday, June 26th was the first full day in Canada. The girls enjoyed a day of Football Golf in Mirabel before heading to the Stadium to see Germany’s victory against France in the Women’s World Cup Quarter Finals.
After an exciting night, 6 Junior Rough Riders teams GU9 – GU13 attended the 2-day long Laval International Girls Tournament in the competitive division. With all teams playing up one year in age, all teams did a phenomenal job. Two teams, the Junior Rough Riders GU9 and the Junior Rough Riders GU13 Blue advanced to the playoffs, where the GU13 Blue team managed to came out as the Laval Cup Champions.
“This has been a great experience for the players. The opportunity to play in an international tournament as well as attending the Women’s World Cup has been tremendous for all the teams, players and families,” said Junior Rough Riders GU13 Coach and Rough Riders Vice President Meghan Frey. “The exposure to women’s soccer at this level is something we are very excited to have provided for the kids.”
The evening was spent walking around Montreal doing sightseeing, making this trip one to remember. Moreover, the group attended the Rough Riders women’s game against Laval on Sunday night. The fifth, and second to last day, was spent in La Ronde Montreal Amusement Park, where the kids had the chance to experience some of the greatest roller coasters Canada has to offer.
Tuesday, June 30th was the last day of this exciting trip, which has not only given the kids international experience and insight on the biggest women’s soccer tournament but also strengthen their team feeling. The trip ended with the group attending the Women’s World Cup Semi Final Match, Germany vs. USA, where the kids saw their team advancing to the Finals this upcoming Sunday.
