PLAINVIEW, N.Y. – The Long Island Rough Riders, exclusive PDL affiliate of New York City FC, today are pleased to announce the signings of Charlie Ledula and Harry Pearse for the upcoming 2018 season.
Ledula, a forward, and Pearse, a midfielder, both play collegiately for LIU Post. The pair helped guide the Pioneers to the NCAA Division II Tournament quarterfinals and an 18-1-2 record in the fall.
“I’m delighted to welcome to Harry and Charlie to the Rough Riders this year,” Rough Riders first-year head coach Stephen Roche said. “It’s important to get players in from local college programs and with the success LIU Post has had, I’m excited to have two of their top players from over the last few years.”
Ledula had 14 goals and one assist in 20 games (14 starts) this past fall for LIU Post as a junior. A native of London, England, Ledula was named to the United Soccer Coaches’ All-East Region First Team and ECC First Team All-Conference.
Pearse, also a London native, led LIU Post with 11 assists last fall, while adding six goals in 21 games (all starts). A member of the 2017 D2CCA All-East Region Second-Team, Pearse earned his first All-America honors following his final collegiate season.
“Charlie has real pace and can create and score goals,” Roche said. “Harry has a cultured left foot and will provide a creative spark in midfield.”
The LIU Post duo join the Rough Riders, who are coming off a 10-2-5 campaign en route to the 2017 PDL Eastern Conference Final. Long Island, which finished runner-up in the Northeast Division, defeated Mid-Atlantic winners New York Red Bulls U-23 in an Eastern Conference play-in game. The Rough Riders beat the Myrtle Beach Mutiny, winners of the South Division, in the conference semifinals, before losing to eventual PDL champion Charlotte on penalty kicks in the conference final.
Long Island begins its 2018 season against Kingston Stockade FC at 8 p.m. May 9 at John Burns Park in Massapequa, N.Y., in the first round of the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The Rough Riders open PDL play on the road against Red Bulls U-23 at 7 p.m. May 12 at Red Bulls Training Facility in Whippany, N.J.
