Huntington, NY – The Long Island Rough Riders opened its 2015 USL PDL season with an attractive 3:1 win against the Westchester Flames.
An early goal by Westchester’s Winston Lyons, who finished a free kick in the 13th minute, brought the Flames to an early lead.
Just 3 minutes later the Rough Riders came back. Tyler Botte scored through an assist by captain Danny Kramer to tie the game at 1:1 in the 16th minute.
Continuing the Rough Riders began to dominate the game coming out of a strong defense led by game MVP Thomas Wharf. Pulling the strings in the Rough Riders midfield, Joe Holland and Schaun Foster created chance after chance leading to the well-deserved 2:1 in the 35th minute. Finishing off an assist by Holland, Botte scored his second goal of the game.
Once the players returned to the pitch for the second half, the Rough Riders continued to lead the game strong.
Colin Murphy brought the game to its final score of 3:1 through a spectacular shot in the 84th minute. Firing a true cannon ball into the top right corner after another great assist from Holland, Murphy left Flames Goalkeeper Tartara chanceless.
“It was a very good first game of the season,” said head coach Paul Roderick. “The players quickly appeared to be very comfortable with each other and the center back pairing of Gwyther and Wharf looked very solid giving us a solid base to earn a comfortable win.”
The Rough Riders return to CY Donnelly Stadium on Wednesday May 13 when they face the Brooklyn Italians in the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
