The Long Island Rough Riders are pleased to announce the return of captain Kim Marra, midfielder Alexa Schneider and goalkeeper Melissa Guglielmo for the 2019 United Women’s Soccer season.
“The three of them have been key players for the organization over the last few years,” head coach Karim Diallo said. “They were part of the team that made it to the UWS National Championship Semifinal two years ago.”
Marra, the club’s 2018 Player of the Year, patrolled the midfield and even stepped into the back line when needed. She lead Long Island with 861 minutes in 10 matches last season, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
“Kim is an intelligent midfielder who can play anywhere on the field,” Diallo said. “She’s a good leader on and off the field, which I noticed right away after the first couple of training sessions when I joined as head coach last season.”
Schneider was an integral part of the midfield who helped gain possession, turning defense into offense. She ranked second on the team with 801 minutes played, dishing out an assist in the 5-2 win against Western New York Flash on July 2.
“Alexa does not stop running; sometimes I wonder if she ever gets tired on the field,” Diallo said. “She has a wonderful work rate and is the kind of player any coach would love to have on their team. She is tactically very disciplined which makes her very reliable.”
Guglielmo played three matches in goal last season as the Rough Riders went 5-3-2. The shot-stopper made 16 saves in 225 minutes of action in 2018.
“Melissa is a good goalkeeper with excellent communication skills,” Diallo said. “As much as she helps organize her defense she also does not hold back in making them accountable of their actions and decisions.”
The Rough Riders open their 2019 UWS campaign against the Connecticut Fusion on Saturday, May 11. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. from Hofstra University Soccer Stadium.
