The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team looks to rebound from having its three-match United Women’s Soccer win streak snapped by hosting the Lancaster Inferno on June 19.
Kickoff is 5:30 p.m. from Hofstra University Soccer Stadium.
The Rough Riders (4-3-0; 12 points) suffered their first loss in nearly a month, losing 2-0 at Lancaster on June 15 following three consecutive shutout victories.
“We need to get a positive result on Wednesday obviously playing at home, and also trying to fight for every point that would help us get into the playoffs,” head coach Karim Diallo said. “Last year I believe we missed the playoffs by a point.”
Long Island came into the season’s first meeting with Lancaster with back-to-back 2-0 victories over New Jersey Copa FC on May 22 and at Rochester Lancers on June 2 and a 6-0 win against Worcester Smiles on June 5.
The Inferno (3-1-0; 9 points) scored a goal in each half to earn three points in a congested East Conference; the New England Mutiny lead the division at 16 points with Connecticut Fusion at 14 points. Seven points separate the top four teams with Long Island in third place and Lancaster in fourth.
“We had a game plan going into the match but went completely away from it,” Diallo said. “We still had a few chances to score that perhaps could have made the outcome different had we taken them. In the end we did not have a good enough of a game for a positive result.
“We have to be better in the next game.”
