The Long Island Rough Riders, exclusive PDL affiliate of New York City FC, embark on a three-game road trip beginning May 22 at FA Euro New York. Kickoff is 8 p.m. from Aviator Sports and Events Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The Rough Riders (3-1-0) look to remain undefeated in league play following PDL victories over New York Red Bulls Under-23 on May 12 and Ocean City Nor’easters on May 19. After losing 5-0 at Louisville City FC in the 2018 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup second round on May 16, Long Island rebounded three days later by defeating previously unbeaten Ocean City 1-0 on a goal by Charlie Ledula in the 61st minute.
“I thought we were excellent against a very good Ocean City side on Saturday night,” first-year head coach Stephen Roche said. “It was a very good response to the disappointment of the Louisville City FC game. We need to keep taking it one game at a time. Every game is going to be very tough in this division and FA Euro being a local derby brings that extra element to the game as well.”
FA Euro (0-2-0) is coming off consecutive losses to open the season, suffering a 2-1 defeat to the Nor’easters on May 13 and a 3-1 loss to Red Bulls U-23 on May 15.
Not only are the Rough Riders striving to remain unbeaten in the PDL — they’re currently second in the Mid-Atlantic Division based on goal differential — the team wants to continue to showcase its defensive prowess after the first shutout of the season against Ocean City.
“We need more of the same on Tuesday night,” Roche said. “We need to build on that and continue to be tough to beat and organized defensively.”
