The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team concludes its 2019 United Women’s Soccer regular-season campaign against Syracuse DA on July 6.
Kickoff is 4:30 p.m. from Hofstra University Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
Long Island comes into the match following a 5-0 loss to Syracuse DA on June 29 at Solvay High School in Solvay, N.Y. Alex Fontana scored twice as the home side jumped out to a four-goal lead in the first half.
”It’s tough to judge the last game – through injuries and prior commitments we only travelled and played with nine players,” head coach Karim Diallo said. “It was tough on the ones who made the trip to say the least. We have to get back to the things we have been doing well and be consistent with them.”
The Rough Riders are 4-5-0 (12 points) on the season and currently in fifth place in the East Division standings, while Syracuse DA is just ahead of them at 4-3-2 (14 points). A win for either team guarantees fourth place in the division and a berth in the four-team playoffs. A draw gives Syracuse a playoff spot in its first season in the UWS.
New England Mutiny (7-0-2; 23 points), Connecticut Fusion (6-0-2; 20 points) and Lancaster Inferno (6-2-0; 18 points) have already qualified for the East Division playoffs.
“Just playing home and needing to redeem ourselves is enough of a motivation,” Diallo said. “The mindset coming into the season was to go all the way and we cannot do that without winning this game. So yes, it’s a very important game for us.”
Long Island comes into the match having lost three straight games, being outscored 9-1 during that stretch. Syracuse DA is unbeaten in its past three games.
