Kayla Saager scored her fourth goal in three games, but it wasn’t enough as the Long Island Rough Riders women’s team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Lancaster Inferno on June 19 at Hofstra University Soccer Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y.
The loss is the second consecutive for Long Island which drops to 4-4-0 (12 points), while Lancaster improves to 4-1-0 (12 points) with the victory.
In the 35th minute, the Rough Riders worked the ball from the left side across the field to the right as Mia Daly slipped it into the corner of the box to Saager, but the forward was taken down by the defender as she tried to spin with the ball. Saager slotted the penalty kick into the lower right corner a minute later as the home side took a 1-0 advantage.
Long Island maintained its one-goal lead at halftime.
Lancaster, which won the teams’ first meeting 2-0 just four days prior, equalized the score in the 65th minute and snagged all three points with the match-winner in the 81st.
The Rough Riders currently sit in third place in the UWS East Conference at 12 points behind the New England Mutiny (5-0-1; 16 points) and Connecticut Fusion (4-0-2; 14 points) with two matches remaining.
Long Island returns to action against Syracuse DA on June 29. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. from Solvay High School Stadium in Solvay, N.Y.
