The Long Island Rough Riders and Reading United AC played to a 0-0 draw on June 9 at Hofstra University Soccer Stadium.
Long Island, the exclusive USL League Two affiliate of New York City FC, is the first team to earn a point from the 2018 national runners-up this campaign. With the draw, the Rough Riders improve to 3-1-2 (11 points), while Reading United AC falls to 5-0-1 (16 points).
Reading United AC pressed high from the first whistle on Sunday and had the game’s first real chance off a short corner in the fifth minute. The visitors maintained pressure throughout the first half, but Long Island remained steadfast at the back, lead by Pierre Cayet.
The game remained scoreless at halftime.
The Mid Atlantic Division leaders came out firing in the second half and even hit the post. Anthony Alfonso had a chance for Long Island, but his volley was hit directly at the goalkeeper.
The Rough Riders had an opportunity to steal all three points in the 88th minute as Dylan Nealis whipped a cross into the box that second-half substitute Gabe Fernandes met with a thunderous header that went just over the bar.
Reading United AC remains atop the division at 16 points with the Rough Riders in third at 11 points, both having played six games. Lehigh Valley United (4-3-1) is in second place with 13 points from eight games.
The Rough Riders return to action against FA Euro New York on June 19. Kickoff is 8 p.m. from Hofstra University Soccer Stadium.
