Grace Hawkins scored for the third consecutive game as the Long Island Rough Riders women’s team defeated New Jersey Copa FC 2-0 on May 22 at St. John Vianney High School in Holmdel, N.J.
Long Island improves to 2-2-0 with the victory, while NJ Copa FC drops to 1-2-0 following the second meeting between the local rivals this season.
The game was scoreless until the 26th minute. After a nice spell of possession, the Rough Riders worked the ball down the right flank. The cross was chested down just outside of the box where Hawkins latched onto the loose ball, ripping her shot into the top right corner for a 1-0 advantage.
Long Island held a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The visitors were able to double their advantage in the 82nd minute on a goal by Alexa Schneider. A Rough Riders corner kick was cleared from the box by NJ Copa, but like the first goal, fell to the feet of a Long Island player. Schneider controlled it, juked to the left and blasted a shot into the back of the net to secure all three points for the Rough Riders.
Long Island is 1-1-0 on its current three-game roadtrip. The Rough Riders complete the stretch with an away match at Rochester Lancers on June 2. Kickoff is 2 p.m. from Aquinas Institute of Rochester.
