The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team qualified for the United Women’s Soccer East Conference playoffs with a 3-1 win against Syracuse DA on July 6.
Christina Tesoriero and Grace Hawkins each found the back of the net as the Rough Riders closed out the 2019 regular season at 5-5-0 (15 points), finishing in fourth place in the East Conference.
The four-team East Conference playoffs will be played the weekend of July 12-14 with the higher seeds hosting. The highest remaining seed hosts the East Final with the winner earning an automatic bid into the 2019 UWS National Championship (July 19-21). New England Mutiny (8-0-2; 26 points), Connecticut Fusion (7-0-2; 23 points) and Lancaster Inferno (6-3-0; 18 points) round out the four-team field.
Long Island will play at either New England or Connecticut, which has a game remaining against winless Worcester on Monday, in the first round of the East Conference playoffs.
The Rough Riders, which lost 5-0 to Syracuse DA on June 29, fell behind 1-0 on Saturday in the 29th minute, but tied the score just before halftime on a goal by Hawkins. Tesoriero’s goal in the second half gave Long Island the lead and a Syracuse own goal in the 61st minute sealed all three points for the home side.
Shannon Gray had three saves in the victory, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
