Plainview, NY – After a winter of progressive changes in the PDL, the Long Island Rough Riders’ squad has witnessed their first sign of spring: an official schedule. The men’s team will open the 2016 campaign on May 7th (7:30PM) against the Westchester Flames in their initial home game of the PDL season at St. Anthony’s High School. While the team is still in its formative part of pre-season, fans can expect the impact of new relationships with the likes of NYCFC to have an immediate impact on player signings this summer.
“We are looking forward to building on a highly successful 2015 season”, said Flavio Ferri, Rough Riders General Manager. “The squad is shaping up nicely with the core returning as well as some exciting additions. We hope to provide our fans with attractive, winning soccer that continues the successful tradition of the franchise.”
The Rough Riders finished the 2015 regular season in second place in the Mid Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference, setting up a playoff battle with local rivals, Jersey Express S.C. The club has joined the Northeast division for 2016 and make the transition with F.A. Euro and the Westchester Flames.
Rough Riders’ fans will also enjoy another visit to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a single-elimination tournament now its 103rd rendition. Similar to the famous F.A. Cup in England, the competition creates opportunities for all levels of professional soccer in the United States to compete against each other, including 19 total PDL teams, USL, NASL and MLS sides in the later rounds. The Riders will look to improve on their second-round loss to Real Monarchs SLC in 2015, a minor league affiliate of MLS side Real Salt Lake. Our men begin their campaign on May 11th versus a local club based on geographical location, for the ultimate prize of a spot in the 2017-18 CONCACAF Champions’ League. That’s the beauty of the cup: you never know!
Final kick-off times and U.S. Open dates will be determined in the coming weeks. The current Rough Riders’ PDL schedule is as follows:
