The Long Island Rough Riders get the opportunity to avenge their sole loss this season as they host the GPS Portland Phoenix at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Cy Donnelly Stadium on the campus of St. Anthony’s High School.
Long Island lost 6-0 at GPS Portland on June 3. The Rough Riders are 2-0-3 since.
“We have played several games since then and at this point we are more concerned with getting the three points at home, regardless of the opponent,” head coach Flavio Ferri said. “That said, I think we all feel like this game will be different than the first.”
The Rough Riders were outshot 9-8 in the teams’ first meeting, but as Ferri put it, it was one of those games where every shot the Phoenix took seemed to go in. He said the scoreline wasn’t indicative of how his team played.
“Last time, they scored in the first two minutes of the game on their first shot,” Ferri said. “Once we get through the first 10 minutes Friday, I think it’s going to be a very competitive game, unlike the first time around.”
Long Island (5-1-3; 18 points) is coming off a scoreless home draw against AC Connecticut on June 25. The Rough Riders are currently second in the PDL Eastern Conference Northeast Division standings, trailing Seacoast United (9-0-2; 29 points).
“It certainly was a disappointing result based on the amount of clear chances we created,” Ferri said, citing the 18-5 shot advantage. “On the positive side, the point moved us into second place and we kept a clean sheet. We currently control our own destiny as far as playoffs go, which is where we wanted to be at this stage of the season.”
