The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team’s 2019 season came to an end after a 3-0 loss to unbeaten New England Mutiny in the United Women’s Soccer East Conference semifinals on July 12 at Lusitano Stadium in Ludlow, Mass.
Fourth-seeded Long Island finishes the season at 5-6-0.
Top-seeded New England (9-0-2) hosts No. 3 Lancaster Inferno (8-3-0), who defeated No. 2 Connecticut Fusion 2-1 in the other semifinal, in the East Conference Final on July 14. The winner earns an automatic bid to the four-team UWS National Championship from July 19-21.
New England took an early lead against the Rough Riders in the 17th minute on a goal by Kate Howarth, who leads the league with 19 goals and 42 points.
The Mutiny maintained its 1-0 advantage at halftime.
The home side wasted little time adding to its lead just after the interval as Jessica Fernandes’ header off a cross from Zoe Steck made it 2-0 in the 48th minute.
New England added another goal in the 90th minute to seal the victory and advance to the East Conference Final.
