May 2015

Huntington, NY – The Long Island Rough Riders defeat the Brooklyn Italians in the first round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup with a dominant 3 to 1 victory.

The Rough Riders took the lead in the very first minute, after a lightning quick start by Joe Holland, who took the Brooklyn Italians by surprise. Holland scored his first open cup career goal, through an assist by this weeks USL PDL team of the week member Thomas Wharf.

Continuing the game strong, the Rough Riders had multiple chances, leading to a header by Benjamin Wignall in the 17th minute. Brooklyn’s goalkeeper Mike Bernardi saved one handed preventing his team from falling behind further. Struggling to maintain possession, the Brooklyn Italians were lucky to be down just one.

The Brooklyn Italians tied the game at 1 – 1 in the 40th minute after being awarded a penalty kick for a foul on Yannick Laroche. Yvener Guierrer scored the goal, bringing the Brooklyn Italians back into the game.

Starting the second half, both teams came back without any substitutions. The game continued strong as Brooklyn’s Bernardi saved a spectacular shot from Rough Riders Adriano Gabriele in the 53rd minute.

Just one minute after a great save from Rough Riders goalkeeper Joe Martin in the 63rd minute, Brooklyn’s goalkeeper Bernardi answered with yet another great save. Keeping the score even, he saved a penalty kick in the 65th minute, shot by Joe Holland after a handball by Brooklyn’s Penzini.

The Rough Riders reacted quickly, taking the lead in the 66th minute. An assist by Holland, led to a sensational goal by Benjamin Wignall from about 20 Yards out.

Joe Holland brought the game to its final score of 3 – 1 with his second goal of the day through an assist by Gwyther in the 75th minute.

“It was a great result against a very resilient Brooklyn side,” said Rough Riders head coach Paul Roderick. “We showed great character to win the game after missing the penalty when the game was still 1 – 1.”

The Long Island Rough Riders move on to the second round of the 2015 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as they take on USL’s Real Monarchs, welcoming back former Rough Rider Tyler Arnone, on Wednesday, May 20th.

The Rough Riders will resume USL PDL competition on Saturday, May 16 at MacArthur High School in Levittown when they go up against the 2014 Eastern Conference Champions Jersey Express at 7:30pm.
