Two members of the Long Island Rough Riders will be suiting up for their college in the 2018 NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament. Robin Afamefuna and Nathaniel Crofts and the University of Virginia earned the No. 10 seed and a first-round bye in the annual men’s soccer tournament.
Afamefuna, a junior defender/midfielder, started 15 games during the regular season for the Cavaliers. He scored in the 4-1 win at Clemson on Oct. 12.
Crofts, a sophomore forward, had two goals and and six assists in 15 games (all starts) this fall. He had two assists in a 3-0 win against Denver on Oct. 8 and added two more in the 4-1 win at Clemson on Oct. 12.
The Cavaliers (9-3-3) host the winner of University of North Carolina-Wilmington (12-5-2) and Furman (13-6-1) in the tournament’s second round on Nov. 18. Kickoff is 1 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium in Charlottesville, Va.
UVA boasts the nation’s longest NCAA Tournament appearance streak, having qualified 38 consecutive seasons (and 40 overall). The Cavaliers have been one of the best defensive teams in the nation this season with a 0.70 goals against average, ranking second-best in the Atlantic Coast Conference and No. 16 in the country.
The 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s College Cup will be played at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif. The semifinals are Dec. 7 and the championship is Dec. 9.
