The University of Virginia suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat in overtime to the University of Notre Dame in the third round of the 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship on Nov. 25 in South Bend, Ind.
Jack Lynn scored on a header in the closing seconds of the first overtime to propel the Fighting Irish into the tournament quarterfinals against No. 1 Indiana. The 10th-seeded Cavaliers conclude their 2018 campaign at 10-4-3.
Long Island Rough Riders pair Robin Afamefuna and Nathaniel Crofts each played against Notre Dame; Afamefuna starting and going the entire 100 minutes, while Crofts, who scored twice in the second-round win against Furman, started and played 53 minutes.

Afamefuna, a junior defender/midfielder, started all 17 matches for the Cavaliers this fall. His lone goal came in the 4-1 win against Clemson on Oct. 12. Crofts, a sophomore forward, had four goals and six assists for a team-leading 14 points in 17 games (all starts). He had two assists in a 3-0 win against Denver on Oct. 8 and added another set of helpers in the 4-1 win against Clemson four days later.
The 2018 NCAA Division I Men’s College Cup will be played at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium in Santa Barbara, Calif. The semifinals are Dec. 7 and the championship is Dec. 9.
