ROUGH RIDERS RE-SIGN WEBER-ALBER

Team captain returns for eighth season with Long Island

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. – (Monday, April 17, 2017) – The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team is pleased today to announce the signing of captain Sue Weber-Alber for the upcoming 2017 season.

Weber-Alber, 31, has been a mainstay at the center of defense for the Rough Riders, returning for her eighth season with the club and will again serve as captain. Weber-Alber logged a team-leading 813 minutes in nine games during the 2016 season as the Rough Riders were tied for second best in United Women’s Soccer in goals against.

“Our captain and elder stateswoman returns to bring stability and leadership to our team,” Rough Riders head coach Steve Cadet said. “She has proven to be not only one of the best defenders in the league, but really the face of the league and the Rough Riders for the past several years.”

Weber-Alber was an all-league defender in the USL W-League and was named the league’s Defender of the Year in 2008. She also played for the Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer in 2009 under head coach Tony DiCicco, the former United States Women’s National Team coach, who won the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“Sue has been and continues to be a key component to our team’s success,” Rough Riders general manager Flavio Ferri said. “She has the ability to take over games both defensively and by making penetrating runs forward. As our captain, she make players around her better and is an excellent role model for the younger players.”

The 2008 Hofstra University graduate was a two-time All-American and was named Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year three times during her three-year collegiate career. She led the Pride to CAA titles and NCAA Tournament berths in 2005 and ‘07. Weber-Alber was also a two-time CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
