Rough Riders Re-sign Wharf and Gwyther
Mar 2017

Team captains return for 2017 season with the Rough Riders
PLAINVIEW, NY – (Friday, February 10, 2017) – The Long Island Rough Riders are pleased to announce that defenders Tom Wharf and Daniel Gwyther have agreed to terms for the 2017 season. The British senior defensive pair will continue to anchor the team in both experience and play.

A British transplant, Wharf, re-signs with the Rough Riders after six successful seasons wearing the number 5. Last season, Wharf suffered a season ending injury and only saw minutes in the first four matches. He is now healthy and ready for a successful 2017 season and expressed that he won’t go home without a championship.

Also a native of England, Daniel Gwyther re-signs with the Rough Riders after five seasons. Gwyther had an exceptional 2016 season being named Long Island Rough Riders player of the year, holding down the back line to help the team place third in the Mid-Atlantic Division.

In 2014, Wharf and Gwyther led a defense that on average gave up less than one goal per game. Coach Flavio Ferri expects the duo to do the same this season and states, “Tom and Dan bring a wealth of quality and experience to the squad. In addition, both are natural leaders and have the character to motivate and inspire their teammates”.

Tom Wharf and Daniel Gwyther are the team’s first signings for the 2017 season. The club will host open tryouts on Long Island on March 18 at Cantiague Park for current college players and graduated players who are looking to compete at a high level.

The Long Island Rough Riders open their season at home on Saturday, May 13th at 7:30 pm against the Westchester Flames.
