Rough Riders Sign Three For 2021 USL2 Season

Rough RidersUNIONDALE, N.Y. – (Tuesday, April 27, 2021) – The Long Island Rough Riders men’s team is pleased to announce the additions of Huib Achterkamp, Stephen Turnbull, and Niklas Roessler for the upcoming 2021 United Soccer League Two season.

Huib Achterkamp will join his collegiate teammate, Sam Ilin, on the Rough Riders roster for the 2021 season. At Marist, Achterkamp started all 19 games he played in with 6 goals on the year and All-MAAC Second team honors. For the 2018-2019 season, he played for LIU Brooklyn, earning NEC All-Rookie team honors in the process. Before NCAA play, Achterkamp played for BVC in the Netherlands, contributing to four league championships in five years.

‘Huib is one of our more experienced guys having played back in the Netherlands and now with 2 different universities in the US.” Rough Riders Sporting Director Stephen Roche said. “He is a powerful center back who’s good on the ball and we look forward to seeing what he can do this summer.”

Turnbull, a Holtsville, N.Y. native, played for CCSU before transferring to Stony Book University. As a Seawolf, Turnbull started in every game he played and was named captain in 2019. On February 23rd, he appeared in his first match after suffering a broken fibula in 2019.

“’Stephen has had an excellent college career with Stony Brook. He’s another New Yorker to add to a great group of local talent.” Head Coach Tom Bowen said. “He can play in multiple positions and will be a valuable member of the squad.”

Roessler, a midfielder, joins the Rough Riders by way of the University of Albany. During the 2019 season, he started 13 of the 16 games he played in, accounting for 2 goals and 4 assists. Before becoming a Great Dane, Roessler spent two seasons with Salem University and played for Med City FC in the MPSL Summer League.

“We saw Alex play during his time at Albany. he’s a technical hard-working center mid and we feel he adds something different in that position.” Roche said. “It will be exciting to see how he can come in and make us better.”

The Rough Riders open their 2021 USL2 campaign against NJ Copa FC on Saturday, May 22nd at 8:00 pm.
