Mar 2018

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. – (Monday, March 12, 2018) – The Long Island Rough Riders today are pleased to announce that Hofstra University will serve as the home field for the men’s Premier Development League team and the women’s United Women’s Soccer squad for the 2018 season.

The Rough Riders begin the new campaign with a doubleheader starting at 5 p.m. on May 19 at Michael J. Tully Park before moving to the Hofstra Soccer Stadium for the remainder of their home games this season beginning June 6.

Home to the Pride’s men and women’s teams, Hofstra Soccer Stadium is a 1,600-seat facility located on the university’s north campus. Constructed in 2003, the stadium features a 120-yard by 74-yard FieldTurf surface, stadium lighting, and metal bleachers the length of the field.

“We are excited to partner with one of the top sports facilities on Long Island as we continue our efforts to provide our men’s and women’s programs and our fans with a top-level experience on game day,” Rough Riders general manager Pedro Suarez said. “Our organization is making continued efforts to further the pathway to the professional ranks for all of our players and playing at a facility like the Hofstra University Soccer Stadium strengthens those endeavors.”

Long Island’s men’s team went 10-2-5 last season, finishing runner-up in the PDL Eastern Conference Northeast Division. The Rough Riders defeated Mid-Atlantic Division winners New York Red Bulls Under-23 in a conference play-in game. Long Island then beat the Myrtle Beach Mutiny, winners of the South Division, in the conference semifinals before losing on penalty kicks to eventual PDL champion Charlotte in the Eastern Conference Final.

The women’s team went 8-2-2 under first-year head coach Adam Whitehead en route to the UWS Eastern Conference title and berth in the UWS National Championship Semifinal. The Rough Riders, who scored an East Division-leading 35 goals during the regular season and tied for the second-best defense (10 goals allowed), lost on penalty kicks to eventual UWS champion Grand Rapids FC in the national semifinal.

“Both our programs are coming off stellar 2017 campaigns,” Suarez said. “We want to exceed those targets this season and we’re doing everything in our power to assist the players in accomplishing those goals.”
