Huntington, N.Y.  – The Long Island Rough Riders men’s team celebrated a 5 – 1 victory over the Baltimore Bohemians Friday night in their last home game this season and preserved the chance of making it to the playoffs. The supporters at CY Donnelly Stadium also got to see an outstanding performance by Joe Holland who scored 2 goals and had 2 assists.

The Rough Riders started strong right from the beginning. A golden opportunity in the 3rd minute by Keith Detelj set the tone for this game leaving no doubt about it that the focus was on winning. After a long ball played by Shaun Foster to Joe Holland on the right side at 15 yards out, a perfect pass connected to Detelj inside the box, but his shot missed the back post only by inches. Holland proofed Baltimore’s defense with a speedy counter attack in the 21st minute. His solo run through the middle ended with another brilliant pass to Detelj who sent the ball beyond the goal line missing the goal by a whisker – almost an exact copy of the scene in the opening minutes.

Baltimore on the other hand barely made it into the Rough Riders’ half of the field in the first 45minutes. Their shots on target in the 10th and 25th minute from afar were however both saved with ease and scooped up by our #1 Joe Martin.

Everything went quickly in the 32nd minute. A pass by Jimmy Nealis found Holland at 10 yards who took the volley and slotted it in to the low right corner, bringing the Rough Riders one up and marking the half time score.

Only 30 seconds into the second half Joe Holland left Baltimore’s defense startled with an amazing solo run. Without hesitating he finished off with a powerful shot, increasing the lead to 2-0.

In the 55th minute Baltimore was struggling once again with keeping Holland under control. He got himself free on the right flank and sped towards the middle, perfectly served the ball to Glen Reid, who chipped it into the net, leaving Baltimore’s goalkeeper without a chance. It took less than 4 minutes for Holland to send another ball right in front of Detelj’s feet who blasted a shot from the right flank at 10 yards out setting the score to 3-0.Yet, the Rough Riders did not have enough and kept up their attacking game. 10 minutes before the end of normal time a cross played by Jimmy Nealis found Tyler Botte inside the 18, whose well-placed header went right in.

The consolation goal for Baltimore was scored by Becker Jordan in the 86th minute when the ball fell to his feet at the penalty spot. He volleyed the ball into the net, unfortunate for RR goalie Eric Orologio, who was substituted for Joe Martin in minute 77.

With a final score of 5-1, the Long Island Rough Riders remain on top of their division and will travel to Pennsylvania for their upcoming last two games of the regular season next Tuesday and Wednesday.
