Rough Riders in the World Cup: Edson Buddle

Written by Michael Lewis

With the U.S. men’s national team putting the finishing touches preparing to play in the World Cup in Qatar, the Long Island Rough Riders conclude a four-part series on four players who wore the team’s colors who participated in what many people consider to be “The Greatest Show on Earth.”

Those are goalkeeper Tony Meola (USA), defender Wilmer Cabrera (Colombia), forward Edson Buddle (USA) and defender Joseph Scally (USA).

Edson Buddle’s father Winston wanted to name his son after the great Pele. So, he used the Brazilian superstar’s given name Edson. Edson Buddle wound up making his soccer history of his own in the U.S.

During his lone season as a 19-year-old with the Rough Riders in 2000, Buddle demonstrated his potential by connecting for 11 goals. That led to him being taken by the Columbus Crew in the 2001 MLS SuperDraft, kick starting a career in the league and overseas.

He scored 42 goals in 106 appearances for the Crew from 2001-05 before performing for the New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC, LA Galaxy and Colorado Rapids. Buddle also played in Germany for Ingolstadt 04 in Germany during the 2011-12 season, scoring nine goals in 31 matches.

The New Rochelle, N.Y. native finished his MLS career in 2015 with 100 goals and 30 assists in 304 games. He also is 11th on the MLS all-time goal-scoring list.

Buddle was selected to the USMNT’s 2010 squad for the South African World Cup. Even though he bagged a brace in a 3-1 win over Australia in World Cup warm-up match, Buddle was used as a substitute in the 1-1 draw with England and the 1-0 victory over Algeria in the group stage.

He finished his international career with three goals in 11 contests.

More recently, Buddle had coached the Westchester Flames in USL League Two.

The USMNT will take on the Netherland in the Qatar World Cup round of 16 Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10:00am EST.
