Former Long Island Rough Riders defender Sean Nealis signed with the New York Red Bulls, the Major League Soccer club announced.
Nealis, from Massapequa, N.Y., was selected by the 2018 Supporters’ Shield winners in the second round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft.
“Sean has come into camp and earned this contract,” Red Bulls head coach and former Rough Riders player Chris Armas said in a release. “He has grasped the defensive tactics quickly, is athletic, and has many of the qualities we look for in center backs. Sean has a great attitude and we look forward to working with him to help him develop.”
Nealis played for the Rough Riders in 2016, logging 663 minutes across 12 games. The 6-foot-4 center back capped his four-year career at Hofstra University by being named 2018 Colonial Athletic Association Defensive Player of the Year.
Nealis, the Pride captain last fall, started 69 matches in his collegiate career.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to get the chance to play for the New York Red Bulls,” Nealis said. “The coaching staff has been exemplary at helping me come along, and I am looking forward to growing as a player for this organization.”
