Rough Riders Re-Sign Murphy


Midfielder was a finalist as the club’s 2016 Player of the Year

PLAINVIEW, N.Y. – (Thursday, April 13, 2017) – The Long Island Rough Riders, exclusive PDL affiliate of New York City Football Club, today are pleased to announce the signing of midfielder Colin Murphy for the upcoming 2017 season.

Murphy, 26, was a driving force in the midfield last year as he returns to the club for his third season. The midfielder had two goals and three assists in 11 games in 2016. He was a finalist for Rough Riders Player of the Year.

“Colin is one of the top box-to-box midfielders in our conference,” Rough Riders general manager Flavio Ferri said. “He is a tenacious ball winner while also being a one of our primary outlets through the midfield. His character, quality and experience make him a key component to the dynamic, high-tempo style will be playing this season.”

Prior to joining the Rough Riders, Murphy was an integral part of Boston College’s team from 2009-12. He had three goals and 10 assists as a defensive midfielder in 82 games (77 starts) with the Golden Eagles. Murphy has also represented New Zealand at the youth level, playing for his country at the 2007 FIFA Under-17 World Cup and the 2011 FIFA Under-20 World Cup.

Murphy joins the Rough Riders’ roster already comprised of forward Junior Rosero, midfielders Stephen Roche and Harrison Weilbacher, and defenders Jeff Medina, Andre Morrison, captain Tom Wharf, Stephen McKenna and Daniel Gwyther.

The Long Island Rough Riders open the 2017 season on Saturday, May 13 at 7:30 p.m. at home against the Westchester Flames.
