UNIONDALE, N.Y. – (Thursday, April 22, 2021) – The Long Island Rough Riders men’s team is pleased to announce the additions of Matt Sloan, Marco Milanese, and Samuel Ilin for the upcoming 2021 United Soccer League Two season.
Matt Sloan got his start with the Rough Riders as a 17-year-old and has played for the club every year since. A current player at Fordham University, Sloan and the rest of the Rams are fresh off an A10 Championship victory where he was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the Championship. As a Rough Rider in 2019, he played in 10 games, scoring 6 times.
“Matt started with us as a 17-year-old and has been with us for some memorable seasons. He will be coming off what is probably his best college season and is doing extremely well with a very good Fordham team.” Rough Riders Sporting Director Stephen Roche said. “We are delighted to have a player of his ability and the commitment he has shown to Rough Riders has been excellent.”
Milanese, a center back, will be joining his collegiate teammate, Carlo Ritaccio on Long Island this season with the Rough Riders. A native of Isernia, Italy, Marco plays collegiately for Akron University and helped lead a defensive unit that had 4 shutouts in 2019 and 8 in 2018. Before Akron, he played for Isernia in the Eccellenza League and served as the captain for the Italian U-15 and U-17 squads.
“Marco has a wealth of experience both internationally and in the US collegiately, starting in the National final for Akron in 2018.” Rough Riders Head Coach Tom Bowen said. “We look forward to working with Marco and seeing how he can be a leading player in our backline.”
Ilin, a goalkeeper, adds another layer of depth at the position for the Rough Riders. The MAAC Goalkeeper of the Year started all 19 games for Marist, securing 71 saves for a 71.0 save percentage. Prior to Marist, Sam started in 15 out of 16 games with LIU Brooklyn, resulting in a .795 save percentage. He also represented the New York Red Bulls developmental academy level as well as playing in both the USL 1 and USL two leagues with both Red Bulls II and U23 teams.
“Sam is another terrific New York Goalkeeper we are lucky to have join us this season.” Bowen Said. “Unfortunately, he didn’t get to play this Spring but in 2019 was one of the best Goalkeepers in the Northeast having a superb season with Marist. He’s a terrific trainer with a great attitude we are excited about this addition.”
The Rough Riders open their 2021 USL2 campaign against NJ Copa FC on Saturday, May 22nd at 8:00 pm.
