The Rough Riders women’s team earned its first win of the 2018 season and earned a hard-fought point the following night in a successful road swing this past weekend.
The Rough Riders (1-1-1) trailed the Flash after just two minutes as Erica Hubert put the home side ahead, but scored twice in less than a minute to take a 2-1 advantage at halftime. Kayla Saager’s free kick snuck past the wall and into the low left corner to knot the match at 1-1 in the 29th minute. Seconds later, the Rough Riders found the back of the net again as Morgan Santoro latched onto a through ball from Kim Marra.
Long Island extended its advantage to 3-1 in the 58th minute as Francesca Venezia ripped a shot past Western NY goalie Megan Tock. The club’s scoring continued as Saager found Santoro for another solid shot past Tock to make it 4-1. The home side answered back with a penalty kick, but the Rough Riders put the game to bed in the 67th minute. Laura Gomez received the ball over the top then lobbed a cross to the back post that was headed home by Venezia to seal all three points.
Just as Long Island fell behind against Western NY, the Rough Riders found themselves in another hole against the Lancers on Sunday. Brooke Barbuto put Rochester ahead in the 26th minute, a lead which held at halftime. The Rough Riders responded with a goal by Gomez in the 73rd minute to earn a draw.
The Rough Riders entertain New York Surf (June 6) and Rochester (June 9) at Hofstra University Soccer Stadium before embarking on a two-game road trip.
