PLAINVIEW, N.Y. – The Long Island Rough Riders, exclusive PDL affiliate of New York City Football Club, today are pleased to announce the signings of Tom Wharf and Shaun Foster for the upcoming 2018 season.
Wharf, a center back, and Foster, a midfielder, will both serve as players/assistant coaches under first-year head coach Stephen Roche. Wharf will again be team captain, while Foster will be vice captain.
“Both are fantastic leaders and players who will be my voice on the field,” Roche said. “It’s great to have trust in guys like this, and others, who I know will guide the younger lads through the games with their knowledge and experience.”
Wharf, who is returning for his eighth season with the organization, led the team with 1,170 minutes played during the 2017 regular season. Foster, who was second with 1,135 minutes played, had one goal and three assists in the regular season.
Both were integral parts in propelling the Rough Riders to a 10-2-5 record en route to the 2017 Eastern Conference Final. Long Island, which finished runner-up in the Northeast Division, defeated Mid-Atlantic winners New York Red Bulls U-23 in an Eastern Conference play-in game. The Rough Riders beat the Myrtle Beach Mutiny, winners of the South Division, in the conference semifinals, before losing to eventual PDL champion Charlotte on penalty kicks in the Eastern Conference Final.
“They are both tough, very hard working, and very dedicated to the game and also good fun to work with which is important,” Roche said. “I look forward to working with both in a new capacity after being teammates for so many years.”
Long Island opens the 2018 season on the road against New York Red Bulls Under-23 at 7 p.m. May 12 at Red Bulls Training Facility in Whippany, N.J.
