Plainview, NY – The Long Island Rough Riders took home a 3 – 1 victory in their rematch against the North Jersey Valkyries. After a 4 – 0 victory in their first game and a tough 2 – 4 loss last week, the Rough Riders earned three important points, securing their spot in the playoffs.
The game started strong, as a good corner kick connected to Danielle Schulmann but Phallon Tullis-Joyce saved her shot in the first minute. The Rough Riders had their first good chance after a corner by CJ Ludemann, but her shot failed to connect inside the box. Just minutes after Valkyries goalkeeper Kate Courter saved a great header by Alexa Schneider, Shan Jones scored the first goal of the night in the 12th minute. Jones got herself free inside the box after goalkeeper Courter lost the ball, her shot went right into the lower right corner.
Pushing for the equalizer, the Valkyries started a good counter attack in the 18th minute, bur the pass that found Ashley Clarke at the 10-yard mark was called offside. Just one minute after a corner kick by Ludemann created a good chance for Kelly Eagan inside the box, it was Ludemann herself scoring the second goal through a good assist by Schneider in the 24th minute.
The Valkyries were now pushing for the goal, but Jennifer Mihok’s free kick in the 37th minute failed to connect and Nickolette Driese’s shot after a counter attack in the 44th minute went far over the cross bar. Good defensive work kept the score at 2 – 0 at halftime.
The second half started strong as a good pass connected to Kober about 15 yards out, but her shot in the 46th minute missed the left post by inches. Continuing the game, Tullis-Joyce saved a good shot by Mihok from 20 yards out in the 52nd minute, leading to a good Rough Riders counter attack. Shelby Halasz shot from 20 yards out, missed the crossbar by inches.
Schulmann scored the first goal for the Valkyries in the 70th minute, but the Rough Riders came back to advance the score to 3 – 1 only three minutes later. It was yet again Jones who scored the third Rough Riders goal of the night, after the Rough Riders defense cleared a corner kick by the Valkyries. This was Shan Jones 10th goal of the season.
The game came to a close as another good shot by Jones from 30 yards out went just inches over the crossbar and Tullis-Joyce saved another great shot by the Valkyries. With this important 3 – 1 victory, the Rough Riders secured their spot in the Playoffs. Congratulations!
The Rough Riders will resume W-League competition on Sunday, July 12th when the go on the road to take on the New York Magic for a great rematch on the fields of Iona College.
