The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team hits the road for their final away game of the season, playing New York Surf at 2 p.m. Saturday at SUNY Maritime.
The Rough Riders and Surf are jostling for a United Women’s Soccer playoff berth with Long Island fourth in the East Conference (5-1-1; 16 points) and NY Surf (5-2-2; 17 points) one spot above.
“This game will definitely have the feel of a playoff game,” Rough Riders general manager Flavio Ferri said. “Considering we have less games played, a good result will leave us in a very good position heading into the home stretch of the season.”
Long Island, which wraps up the 2017 regular season at home against New York Magic (July 14) and Lancaster Inferno (July 16), is heading into the game against New York Surf on the heels of a 5-1 win against Rochester on June 30. Morgan Santoro and Erica Modina had two goals apiece, while Taylor Groth notched a pair of assists in Long Island’s first home game in nearly a month.
Defender Kimberly Marra was named to the UWS Team of the Week for her performance against Rochester, and midfielder Sofia Sanchez was named to the UWS Team of the Week Honorable Mention after scoring in the win.
Long Island has the second-best defense in the league, allowing five goals all season, including none in the first half of games.
“With both or men’s and women’s teams, we try to maintain leads by adding to them,” Ferri said. “I am a fan of that mindset as teams know that if they send everyone forward, they are potentially exposing themselves to giving up additional goals.”
