The Long Island Rough Riders women’s team returns home for the first time in more than a month against the Rochester Lancers on Friday. Kick off is 5 p.m. from Cy Donnelly Stadium on the campus of St. Anthony’s High School.
Long Island, which hasn’t had a home game since a 3-0 win against New Jersey Copa FC on May 20, is coming off a four-game road trip. The Rough Riders went 3-1-0 during that stretch, suffering their first defeat of the season — a 2-1 loss at NJ Copa on June 25.
“I think the last game against Copa was a bit of a wake up call for the team,” general manager Flavio Ferri said. “I think the girls will come out focused. The three points are crucial. Based on the number of games remaining, we still control our own destiny as far as playoffs go. A win keeps us in that position.”
The Rough Riders (4-1-1; 13 points) are fourth in the United Women’s Soccer East Conference, trailing New Jersey Copa FC (6-1-1; 19 points), New England Mutiny (5-2-0; 15 points) and New York Surf (4-2-2; 14 points).
Long Island started fast against 2016 UWS runner-up New Jersey Copa, taking a 1-0 lead on Madison Vasquez’s goal four minutes in. The Rough Riders maintained their advantage at halftime before NJ Copa scored twice in less than 10 minutes in the second half to rally for the victory.
“I think we became a bit too conservative in the second half and we were worried more about preserving the lead than adding to it,” Ferri said.
Despite the loss, Ferri is confident Long Island will bounce back Friday. Rochester (0-7-1; 1 point) is bottom of the conference standings. The Lancers have lost five straight games following a 3-2 defeat to Western NY Flash on June 24.
“I think the team is processing the loss in positive way and I expect a good performance Friday,” Ferri said.
