Bronx, N.Y. – It was about as perfect as a start for the Rough Rider’s women’s team as they could ask for. The Rough Riders went on the road to Marillac Field to take on Manhattan SC, and scored six goals by five different players en route to a 6-1 victory in their opening match of the season on Wednesday night.

The Rough Riders with three points find themselves nominally in first in the Metropolitan Division, looking to repeat last year’s first place finish in the Metropolitan Division. Manhattan SC, with zero points after one game, finds themselves in last place.

The Rough Riders dominated the game in the first half, out-shooting Manhattan 23-2. However, run of play was back in forth early on in the match before Kayleigh Goodrich received the ball in the box and dumped it off to Fiona Kilian who smoked a one-timer top bins to score the Rough Rider’s first goal in the 14th minute.

Goodrich got a goal of her own in the 19th minute, scoring off a rebound of a shot from Micala Boex, putting the Rough Riders up 2-0.

As the rain started to pour down, the Rough Riders continued to pour on the goals. Lia Howard scored in the 29th minute bringing the lead to 3-0.

Olivia Pearse brought the lead to 4-0 in the 36th minute, scoring a header off of a corner kick from Chloe Shimkin.

Shimkin also got a goal of her own not four minutes later, putting away a cross in the box from Kailey McCormick, increasing the Rough Riders lead to 5-0 in the 40th minute.

Shimkin put the cherry on top of the Rough Rider’s offensive output, getting a brace in the 46th minute. She got her second goal on a free kick about 40 yards out from the goal that no one else touched which then bounced and snuck by the goalie to move the score to 6-0.

The clean sheet was spoiled for the Rough Riders in the 61st minute. A miscommunication on a back pass between defender Olivia Pearse and keeper Samantha Graf allowed Manhattan’s Gwyneth Schulman to take the ball away in front of the Rough Rider’s net and scoring, getting Manhattan on the board 6-1.

The Rough Riders W League women’s team have their second of four away games to start the season at Frederick Douglass Field in Newark, N.J., facing off against Morris Elite FC on Saturday, May 23 at 3:30pm.
