Uniondale, N.Y. – With the Metropolitan Division championship coming down to the wire, the Rough Riders win their penultimate USL W League match 6-1 over the Cedar Stars on Wednesday evening.
The Rough Riders came into this match in control of their own destiny: If they win the rest of their matches, they will win the Metropolitan Division. The Cedar Stars came into the match coming off their third win of the season, looking for better results.
The Cedar Starts defense held firm initially, but Long Island scored in rapid succession in the 16th and 21st minute. In the 16th minute, Long Island forward Luciana Setteducate sent a cross into the box that deflected to eighteen where midfielder Kayleigh Goodrich received the ball. She took one shot, that was blocked by a defender, she took a second shot, that was blocked, but her third shot went true and found the back of the net, 1-0.
In the 21st minute, Long Island substitute Chloe Shimkin sent a long pass on a counter attack to forward Micala Boex who attacked at the top of box a ripped a shot into the corner, 2-0.
Long Island continued the attack in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute. Boex attacked down the right side, passed into the box to Goodrich, who passed it one more time to Shimkin who scored, 3-0.
Long Island ran away with things after that, scoring three more times. Setteducate scored on a nice through ball from Fiona Killian in the 57th minute, 4-0.
In the 66th minute, Boex beat the keeper to the ball on an in-between ball and put it in the back of the net, 5-0, getting a brace.
Goodrich got the final goal of the evening for Long Island, getting space in transition and scoring, 6-0.
The clean sheet was spoiled in the 89th minute. The Cedar Stars got a free kick on the left wing. The cross bounced around in the box before Cedar Stars’ Katherine Slott put the ball in the net, 6-1.
With the win, the Rough Riders lead in the Metropolitan Division with one game to go, with 24 points (8-1-0). With the loss, the Cedar Stars stay at nine points (3-5-0).
The Rough Riders control their own destiny. With a win or a tie in their next match, they will win the division. And their final match of the season with all to play for is on Sunday at home vs Paisley Athletic at 3:00 PM on June 28 at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y.
