Long Island Rough Riders’ 2012 Boys Club Captain, Benjamin Meijer, recently traveled to England to watch Liverpool FC face Brentford FC. The experience was a dream come true for the young soccer enthusiast and a reminder of how the Rough Riders family has shaped his love for the game.
The Meijer family expressed gratitude to the Rough Riders family and coaches that have inspired their son along the way: Adam, Ethan, Harry, Courtney, Tom and Tom to name a few. And a special recognition to former Rough Riders Community Coach, Jake Rodgers, who played a pivotal role in igniting Benjamin’s passion for soccer. Jake’s journey has taken him to roles with Sheffield United and Premier League side Brentford FC.
Benjamin’s Rise Through the Rough Riders Pathway
Affectionately known as “Benny” by his teammates and coaches, Benjamin’s journey with the Rough Riders began at age five in their introductory clinics. From clinics to camps and then the Pre-Academy program, Benny honed his skills and developed leadership qualities.
In 2020, Benny joined the Rough Riders USL Y program, competing at a higher level and gaining exposure to elite competition. His dedication led to his selection as the 2012 Boys Club Captain, attending the USL Y Finals for three consecutive seasons.
Reflecting on his journey, Benny shared, “One of my favourite things about Rough Riders is all the different coaches I have had the opportunity to meet over the years! From my first Coach in 2018 (Coach Jake) to my current coach (Coach Tom) and all the coaches in between…I am grateful for them all. They have all helped me grow as a player and a fan of the game.”
A Global Perspective on the Game
Benjamin’s trip to England wasn’t just about watching soccer; it connected him to the global soccer community. Witnessing Brentford FC’s match highlighted Jake Rodgers’ journey—a coach who inspired him on Long Island and now thrives in England.
Benny shared his thoughts about this unforgettable experience:
- What was the most incredible part of your mascot experience?
“Meeting the Liverpool and Dutch National Team captain Virgil Van Dijk.”
- How would you describe the atmosphere being in the tunnel and on a stadium field with Premier League players?
“The tunnel was tense and walking out onto the field was a feeling I will never forget. Almost 20k people were standing and cheering…it was unreal!”
- How has Jake and your Rough Riders coaches contributed to your development?
“Coach Jake coached me every day one summer, teaching me skills I still use. Thanks to him, I’ve attended Premier League games and met heroes who inspire me to work harder toward my dream of becoming a professional player.”
The Rough Riders Impact
Benjamin’s story exemplifies the Rough Riders’ commitment to developing skilled players and well-rounded individuals. Their structured pathway—from clinics to USL Youth—creates an environment where players like Benny thrive and emerge as leaders.
