Questions

Evaluation FAQs

Who can attend evaluations?

Boys and girls in age groups U10 through U17, from any club on Long Island.

Do I have to leave my club?

No. USL Y League is a seasonal summer team — you stay with your club for the rest of the year.

If I join the Nassau club, can I also play for Suffolk?

No. Nassau and Suffolk are two separate clubs in the USL Y League, each with its own registration, rosters and league schedule. A player is registered to one club for the season and can only train and play with that club — so you can't move between Nassau and Suffolk teams or guest-play for the other county.

Choose the county where you'll train: Nassau at Mitchel Athletic Complex or Suffolk at Suffolk County Community College. Attend evaluations in that county and register through its link.

When and where are evaluations?

Open evaluations run November–February. Nassau: boys Sunday, Nov 8 and Sunday, Dec 27; girls Sunday, Nov 15 and Sunday, Jan 3; all at Globall Sports Center Nassau. Suffolk: boys and girls Monday, Dec 21 at Stony Brook Bubble, then boys Tuesday, Feb 16 and girls Thursday, Feb 18 at Suffolk County Community College, Brentwood Campus. Invitational-only evaluations may be held February–April for any remaining roster spots. Find your age-group time in the schedule above and arrive 15 minutes early to check in.

How are players selected?

Each county holds two open evaluations between November and February, and players are strongly encouraged to attend both. Rosters are built throughout these sessions, with additional invitational-only evaluations held February–April for any remaining roster spots. Boys and girls are evaluated separately. All rosters are finalized on April 15.

I've been selected. When does the season start?

Rosters are finalized on April 15, and selected players attend Onboarding Day on May 16. Training begins on June 15, with 12 sessions running through the first week of August, alongside 6–8 USL Y League matches depending on age group.

What does it cost?

Evaluations are a one-time $20 fee. The full season is $695 in both Nassau and Suffolk, and includes 12 training sessions and 6–8 USL Y League matches.

The required uniform kit (2 jerseys, 2 shorts, 2 pairs of socks) is priced separately: $130 youth or $147 adult, based on the player's size and age. Tax and shipping are not included. Optional add-ons are available: training top, additional jersey, sweatshirt, pants, zip-up jacket and backpack.

What's the time commitment?

12 training sessions between June 15 and the first week of August, by age group, plus 6–8 matches depending on age group, scheduled June to early August. Home games are mostly on weekends.

How does a team reach the National Final?

Teams qualify through the USL Y League North Atlantic region leagues. Nine Rough Riders teams qualified for the 2026 National Finals, the most in the North Atlantic Division and tied for the most nationwide. The National Final is held in Tampa, Florida, in December.

If my team qualifies, do we have to go to Tampa?

Yes. Reaching the National Final in Tampa is the goal of every Rough Riders USL Y team, and the whole roster commits to it at registration. If the team qualifies, attendance is compulsory for every rostered player.

Why is there a player bond?

Once rosters are submitted to the league, players can't be replaced. The refundable $150 bond secures each player's commitment to the National Final, so every teammate keeps their chance to compete in Tampa.

• Team doesn't qualify: the bond is fully refunded.
• Team qualifies and the player attends: the bond is applied to travel costs.
• Team qualifies and the player doesn't attend: the bond is forfeited.

What happens if a qualifying team can't attend?

If too many players drop out, the team may have to withdraw and the league charges the club a penalty. If your player isn't prepared to attend the National Final should the team qualify, please don't register for evaluations.

The road to Tampa starts in November.

Spots are limited and filled by age group.
