UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Long Island Rough Riders women recorded a 3-1 win over Cedar Stars Academy in their final USL W League regular season game, in a match that was abandoned at halftime because of lightning, at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon.
The Metropolitan Division champions remained unbeaten at 10-0-2, while accruing 32 out of a possible 36 points, while Cedar Stars (20), wound up playing with 10 players late in the first half due to an injury, dropped to 6-4-2.
Fiona Kilian gave the Rough Riders all the scoring they needed in the 19th minute, when she curled a 20-yard shot into the right side of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Four minutes later, Cedar Stars, however, knotted things up at 1-1 when Danielle Howard connected for the equalizer from the top of the box into the lower left corner past goalkeeper Nicolette Pasqurella.
Luciana Setteducate tallied her league-leading 18th goal in the 28th minute to give Long Island the lead for good scoring after a fine feed from Mille Davies for a 2-1 margin.
After a water break on the half hour, Nora Basile made it 3-1 in the 45th minute.
About a minute after the goal, match officials called for a lightning delay. Some 45 minutes later, the game was declared abandoned, with the full results going into the record book.
