Men Settle Scoreless in a 0-0 Tie with FA Euro

BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Despite outplaying FA Euro New York by a considerable margin, the Long Island Rough Riders were forced to settle for a scoreless draw in an entertaining USL League Two game at Poly Prep Country Day School on Wednesday night.

The Rough Riders (7-2-1, 22 points), who dominated the match from the opening kickoff to the final whistle, moved into first place in the Metropolitan Division past idle Manhattan SC (7-1-0, 21), which has two games in hand.

The heroics of FA Euro goalkeeper Ben Woelfinger and the woodwork kept the visitors off the scoreboard while denying them three points. FA Euro (12) moved to 3-4-3.

Long Island came close to scoring on numerous occasions. The team hit the woodwork twice during a two-minute span late in the match, including Matt Vowinkel’s smash off the left post via his diving header in the 79th minute.

Woelfinger was superb in the net for the hosts, frustrating the Rough Riders several times.

His most memorable save came five minutes into second-half stoppage time as he denied Justin Weiss in a 1 v 1 situation.

LI played the final minutes of stoppage without head coach Tom Bowen, who was red carded in the 95th minute. Only two minutes prior, Niklas Roessler, who was sitting on the bench, was given his marching orders as well.

The Rough Riders are in the midst of a six-game road swing. They will continue to play away at Morris Elite on Saturday, July 2 at 6:30 p.m. and at Manhattan SC at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, July 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Long Island will return home for its final two games of the regular season, hosting the Westchester Flames at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale, N.Y. on Sunday, July 10 at 6:30 p.m. and FA Euro at the complex on Wednesday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m.
