Men Top Westchester 4-0 in Sunday’s Match

UNIONDALE, N.Y. – The Long Island Rough Riders men moved closer to clinching a USL League Two playoff berth behind an emphatic 4-0 win over the Westchester Flames at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Sunday night.

Ryan Carmichcael tallied twice, and Pierce Infuso and Amir Daley added goals for the Riders (10-2-1, 31 points), who remained atop the Metropolitan Division standings. The Flames (5) dropped to 1-10-2.

Goalkeeper Wessel Speel (first half) and Andrew Hammersley (second half) combined for the clean sheet, the Rough Riders’ fifth of the season and third in their last four games. Hammersley preserved the shutout, making two big saves on Joshua Bolma in the 70th minute. He produced a two-handed save on the onrushing Bolma’s header before denying the Flames player again on a close-range head shot only seconds later.

On the other end of the pitch, Carmichael bagged his brace by the opening half hour.

First, after a nifty run and feed from Roc Carles Puig, Carmichael turned and drilled a shot from the top of the box past goalkeeper Dario Maricevic for a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

Right back Mason Tataful led Carmichael with a beautiful long ball in the 28th minute. The forward split two defenders before depositing the ball into the back of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

The Rough Riders were relentless as Infuso, a center back, increased their lead to 3-0, heading in a Niklas Roessler corner kick in traffic in the 33rd minute, his first of the campaign.

Jamie DiLuzio and Daley, who both entered the match in the 65th minute, combined for Long Island’s final goal in the 74th minute. DiLuzio sent a left-wing cross to Daley, who scored off a spectacular sliding goal, his first of the season.

The Rough Riders and their official healthcare provider, Stony Brook Orthopaedic Associates (SBOA), a practice of Stony Brook Medicine, co-hosted “SBOA Health Care Appreciation Night.” They provided complimentary ticket entry for all healthcare workers to the team’s doubleheader. The Rough Riders women recorded a 7-0 victory over the Westchester Flames in the opener.

Long Island closes out its regular season against FA Euro New York at Mitchel on Wednesday, July 13 at 7:30 p.m.
