Uniondale, N.Y. – The Long Island Rough Riders proudly congratulate former player and club legend Giovanni Savarese on being named the new Head Coach of Australian A-League powerhouse Melbourne Victory. The club announced Savarese’s appointment on a two-year contract, adding another significant chapter to an already distinguished football career.
Long before his success on the sidelines in Major League Soccer and abroad, Savarese was a key figure in the Long Island Rough Riders’ golden era. The Venezuelan striker played an instrumental role in leading the Rough Riders to the 1995 USISL National Championship, helping establish the club as one of the premier organizations in American soccer.

Savarese’s time on Long Island left a lasting legacy. His goal-scoring ability, leadership, and passion for the game made him a fan favorite and an important part of one of the most successful teams in club history. His achievements with the Rough Riders served as a springboard to an outstanding professional playing career that included stops with the MetroStars, New England Revolution, San Jose Earthquakes, and the Venezuelan National Team.
As a coach, Savarese has built an impressive résumé. He guided the New York Cosmos to multiple championships and spent more than five seasons as Head Coach of the Portland Timbers, leading the club to four playoff appearances and two MLS Cup Finals.
Now, Savarese takes his talents to one of Australia’s most successful clubs, where he will look to lead Melbourne Victory into its next era.
The Long Island Rough Riders organization is incredibly proud to see one of its own continue to make an impact on the global stage.
Congratulations, Gio! Once a Rough Rider, always a Rough Rider.
